A Day in the Life of an Online Business Manager

Kate, what are you doing now?!

I’m…erm..I uh…I help  growing small businesses with their day-to-day operations.

….Like, what do you do though?

The beginnings of recent conversations start a lot like this and end with me giving examples of the things I help my clients with on a daily basis. It can be a long convo! So, I haven’t worked the bugs out of my elevator pitch yet, but it can be hard to drill down exactly what I do as an Online Business Manager (OBM) when every day is so different.

My role as an OBM is to help manage my client’s business operations to free up their time, so they can manage the big picture stuff or take a vacation.

Here’s what my family thinks I do:

Here’s what I do at a high level:

  • Business strategy
  • Launch management
  • Team and project management

Here’s what I actually do:

  • Interview candidates for tech positions for growing companies
  • Strategize and implement reorganization of team and operations
  • Market and launch workshops
  • Develop profit and loss presentation for company acquisition
  • Research and locate international manufacturer of materials
  • Work with web development teams to plan, design and execute custom websites
  • Develop handbook and requirements for international distributors
  • Draft service agreements, terms and conditions and privacy policies
  • Source, submit and publish client’s content in national publications
  • Research, nurture and coordinate podcast opportunities
  • Oversee development and execution of digital marketing strategies
  • Onboard and train new employees
  • Manage payroll, benefits and HR compliance
  • Recommend new software and processes for added efficiency
  • Figure out answers/solutions to a whole lot of stuff I never knew before
  • Attend professional development opportunities
  • Business Development for my own biz

The clients I work with are often online businesses and/or distributed teams, so to be successful, all I need is stable wifi, a laptop, great communication, task management software, and the ability to navigate time differences.
